Chapter 4

Sometime, in the darkest hour of the night, Geldkeep had slipped out of my bed, and I’d woken, searched the bed for him, and groaned when I realized I was alone.

The next morning, Geldkeep knocked on my door at half past eight.

I was still in bed, nestled under the thick down duvet. I knew I’d have to meet with Vater today and I thought a little morning action might be just the thing to smooth the edges.

“Come in,” I called.

The door opened and Geldkeep stood in the doorframe, not a single blonde hair was out of place. Today he was dressed in a red and white sweater and tight jeans.

“I’m so cold,” I said, making a chattering noise with my teeth. “Can you warm me up?”

“I wish I could, but it’s time for your meeting with your father.”

“Surely, it can wait a few minutes.”

He shook his head. “Get dressed and meet me downstairs in the Great Hall in ten minutes.”

“Breakfast?” I asked, plastering on my best pouty face.

“After you meet with your father.” He stepped back into the hallway and closed the door behind him.

Sexually frustrated and cold. Hell of a way to start the day.

After I washed my face and dressed in a warm sweater and leggings, I slipped my feet into the fur-lined boots and clomped out of my room. Even in the sweater, I was shivering. I wished, not for the first time, that I had stayed in the islands. Whole world be damned. I was halfway down the staircase before I saw that all three men stood at the foot of the stairs.

“Morning, boys.” I said.

I moved to brush past them and down the hallway that led to my father’s office, but Dane placed his arm out, stopping me.

“I have a meeting,” I said in my most condescending voice. I was cold and horny and incredibly inconvenienced by this trip to this God-forsaken rock in the middle of the sea.

“We’re going with you.”

“I can deal with my father. Thank you.”

“He’s expecting us,” Geldkeep said.

“Is that true, March?”

March nodded.

“Well, let’s go then.”

The three of them fell in behind me and we walked in silence down the hallway toward my father’s office. I opened the door without knocking, and walked to the large mahogany desk. With my hips square against it, I said, “Enough of the secret shit. It’s time to tell me everything.”

Vater motioned for us to sit. The three men took the long sofa placed against the back wall and I sank into the naughty chair. My father looked as if he’d aged overnight. He looked exhausted, defeated.

“You’re right, Leo. It’s time.”

But instead of beginning, he chose a briar pipe from the rack on the corner of his desk, filled the bowl with tobacco, and tamped it down. He lit it with the engraved silver lighter my mother had given him as a wedding gift. His slow and deliberate motions made me want to scream, but I knew better than to interrupt him. I’d learned that lesson a long time ago.
